As an ArisHost officer puts it: "It's all in that new icon on the left panel menu…. Just click on Aristia and you will access a comprehensive and attractive tutorial on the basics of website management, and the ins and outs of the ArisHost system. The ArisHost Tutorial is set to be a one-of-a-kind interactive customer support. It has everything you need to know to get started with ArisHost. It's our way of gearing up for the coming months. There will be a lot more!"

The Windows XPerience

Windows XP's recent release has once again ignited protests against the much-maligned Microsoft empire. The buzz is that the new operating system is nothing more than another glossed over "corrected" version of its flawed predecessors. It remains imperfect in certain aspects despite new or improved features. And what's worse, several experts have questioned XP's system security.

Yet, Microsoft is Microsoft. Sales are up and will continue in that trend for a long time. And admittedly, the new operating system is impressive. There's the device/hardware and shared DLL support that answers many a Windows platform upgrade problem; the task manager has been improved; as well as several developments in device driver resiliency, and installation, update, repair and backup options. XP is touted as the convergence of the consumer and business lines of Microsoft's operating systems. It has passed independent testing by Ziff Davis Media Company with minimal system crashes unlike its predecessors.

The security issue revolves around the implementation of full raw socket support that critics say have no place outside Internet research projects. Support for full raw sockets exposes the web to untraceable and malicious attacks that are easily programmed, and allows full administrative privileges to all applications by malicious hackers. This comes in light of recent attacks on the computer systems of California's primary electric grid operator (which were undetected for 17 days), as well as several dubious server probes that have raised fears of high-tech espionage.

Furthermore, despite product improvements, Windows XP trail behind Unix-based operating systems when it comes to features, such as multi-user login options. Microsoft's edge is that its proprietary biases have made cross-platforms almost impossible, forcing Windows users to stick with them through crash after crash in their systems.

With this in mind, excitement is naturally low-key, expecting system glitches to appear soon.

The ArisHost site of the week: www.ewokvillage.com

Now this is one fun and interesting site! True to its name, the website is much like a community of Star Wars fans. It's a fine and playful web of online huts, and opened doors where surfers/Star Wars fans meet. In the Party Hut, you could pound the trooper (chat), insult ewoks (post messages), and tell a few stories (post fan fiction). You can join discussion groups, and exchange banners and information about your Star Wars website. There is an Information Hut, but don't think you'd get the answers from here-not yet anyway. But do check out the hut and Ask Wicket. Wicket's like your online galaxy far-away Magic Eight Ball. These, among its other features, make ewokvillage.com a must-surf site!

Question of the Week
Is there a one "best" operating system? I hear so many varieties around, and with the simultaneous releases of Microsoft's platforms, I get confused as what to use.

-- Mark R.
Trinidad, CO

Aristia Says
Well, Mark, fortunately for us consumers, there is no one "best" Operating System. Several choices out there make it possible to tailor-fit the platform you run to whatever computing you need to do.

A Tip from Aristia
There are many issues to consider when picking out an operating system to use. Basic issues include: cost and ease of use, hardware supported and hardware-software integration, scalability and connectivity, security and cross-platform issues. While Microsoft platform releases seem to be the most commercial, there are several other Operating Systems out there that are equally (or more) worthy and inexpensive. Some come free, and unbound by proprietary issues that endlessly hound Microsoft. Think about your options, your needs, and then make the right choice!
