Abuzz at ArisHost

Things are abuzz again at the ArisHost offices. The development and marketing teams of the web hosting company are currently putting together upgrade packages for the whole ArisHost network, and preparing to launch the previously announced Client Referral Program. And man… they are busy!

As reported last week at AH! News, its all systems go for the ArisHost Client Referral Program. Active clients can now earn points that will get them rewards--all they need to do is refer their friends to ArisHost. If their friends register or transfer domains, or have their sites hosted, then both of them win rewards.

ArisHost is also powering up with new packages and information services. It has recently activated a newsletter information extra for people who want to hear about expired domains. Those interested can now subscribe for news on their availability by pointing their browsers to: http://www.arishost.com/expireddomains/. Other upgrade packages are in works, and available very soon.

On Viruses and Hackers

In the wake of the recent panic over the Code Red II virus, Internet security has once again become a hot issue. Code Red II is a rapidly spread virus that attacks vulnerable computers by scanning for flaws within the system, and then defacing websites with "Welcome to http://www.worm.com! Hacked by Chinese!" It directly targets the Whitehouse.gov website but has caused a general slowdown in Internet traffic by 20%. As is known, Code Red is not the first virus to cause some devastation in the already bumpy information highway. Hacking remains a bane to many dotcoms, costing organizations considerable amounts just to repay victimized clients. Major websites such as eBay, Yahoo and Excite have been paralyzed by hackers. And going to the extreme, even the Israeli and Palestinian conflict has carried over to the web, with sympathizers of both sides hacking away the servers and websites of 8 governments including the United States.

The extent of this reality has urged several measures to curb these online illegalities and loss of funds. The British police have published online survival guides and advisories, and trained their investigation team to become IT- savvy so they could adapt to the present wave of cyber outlaws. Antivirus dotcoms are doing brisk business. And even third and first party Internet insurance are already available.

But as it is, the whole web remains highly vulnerable despite these measures. And why not when the basics of worldwide internetworking itself is the opening for these unwanted infiltration. Using email or having LAN or WAN connection is already a hole that can be exploited. And so with having a website or e-store, e-publishing and holding confidential information in a computer system.

Still, this must not take away from the Internet's promise. Global reach through the web is still the way things are going to be done today and in the future. And while security remains largely a software issue, companies like Microsoft should invest in developing robust and less vulnerable computing systems, or improving on the security aspect of existing programs-more than coming out with glossier or meatier versions/products at security's expense.

Technical Support

To some, they are the last bastions of sanity in this very high-tech world. They simplify things and help us out. Yet, they are often misunderstood and unappreciated. Take this case off the web. It made us laugh and hope, for the sake of all Technical Support out there, that this one is just a joke.

Tech Support: "Ok Bob, let's press the control and escape keys at the same time. This brings up a task list in the middle of the screen. Now type the letter 'P' to bring up the Program Manager."

Customer: "I don't have a 'P'."
Tech Support: "On your keyboard, Bob."
Customer: "What do you mean?"
Tech Support: "'P' on your keyboard, Bob."
Customer: "I'm not going to do that!"

AH - Q
My website takes a long time to load because of the graphics but I don't want to get rid of them. What should I do?

--- M. Reese
Des Moines, IA

According to Dr. A:

Try to lessen the file size of the graphics you use. Save designs that use less color as gif files, and those of more complex color schemes as jpegs. You can also reconfigure picture clarity in your favorite photo editor.

AH- Tips
It is not the rule that jpegs are lesser-sized graphic files. It all depends on the design. If it's a flat image that uses only a few colors, saving it as jpeg may actually make it bigger in file size.
