IV. "In Living Color": Web Visual Design

You don't need to be told about it again -- that a lot of supposed web "designers" break every rule of effective web page presentation. Web gurus note that most felonies occur in the area of Visual Design. These crimes are perpetrated by zealous designers eager to cram every existing visual element into a web page. The page then ends up looking like a car wreck-- ugly and useless.

Visual design is the first and last part of user interface. Graphic elements should be user-oriented, with page design geared to balance information management. That's simply combining aesthetics and practicality. Just give customers something nice to look at and easy to use. Visual content has to be part of the web site and not just the presentation medium. Give graphics certain jobs to do; they eat up a chunk of bandwidth anyway, might as well make them useful.

Speaking of bandwidth, avoid large graphics files-- downloading can become painfully slow and give customers a less-than-fun time on your site. But if you must have plenty of images, there is a better way of going about it. Thumbnails let you get away with having lots of photos and such, without making customers wait forever for your page to download. Plus, they allow site visitors to see the merchandise upfront. Another neat trick is to use animated GIFs to simulate movies. They're a better option than streaming video because they save on bandwidth and production money.

The goal of web page visual design is to enhance user experience. It should grab customers' attention and then present important information efficiently. It must never be a distraction. Remember, good design considers the end-user, not the designer's whims.

The National Transportation Safety Board recently divulged a highly confidential plan they had funded with US auto makers for the past five years. The NTSB covertly funded a project whereby the auto makers installed black boxes in four wheel drive pick-up trucks in an effort to determine, in fatal accidents, the circumstances, 15 seconds before the crash.

They were surprised to find in 49 of the 50 states, the last words of drivers in 61.2% of fatal crashes were, "Oh, S**t!"

The 50th state, a southern one, gave totally different results. Just before they died, 89.3% of the fatalities' words were, "Hey Y'all, watch this!"

Question of the Week
I've seen some web sites where they let users "customize" the page by letting them tinker with the design and layout. I am actually tempted to do the same for my site. Can I have your opinion? Thanks.

-- Jay L.
Pittsburgh, PA

Aristia Says
This seems to be the trend nowadays, Jay, and it does have its advantages. Users just love this customization stuff. But, studies have shown that majority of users are in fact poor designers. That is, they tend to set up the page in a manner that isn't optimal for their use. For instance, they'll pick color combinations that affect readability. Just put the little extra effort in coming up with a very good design for your web page.

A Tip from Aristia
The scheme of your site's text content is as important as its graphic design. Stick to just a small variety of fonts -- two, maybe three at the most. Do the same thing with font sizes. Don't vary them too much-- it confuses the user. Avoid using blue, red or purple as font colors. People readily see blue text as a link, while red or purple text as visited ones. Be consistent, if you use a font for a header, use the same font for all headers. The main thing is to present information orderly.
