Clean Sweep

In mid-1996, Indy filmmaker and designer Tiffany Shlain was put in charge of creating a site for the tech magazine "The Web." She tossed around some ideas with publisher Greg Mason, who presented to her the word "webby" as something she can start working with. Some time later, Shlaine came up with the idea of recognizing excellence on the Internet-and the Webby Awards was born.

That was only six years ago, but in tech time, it’s been roughly the equivalent to the period between polar shifts. This year, as a testament to the dynamic entity that it is, the Webbys have taken a cue from the net's predecessor: TV. They've announced the launch of Internet Sweeps, a take-off from the traditional May Sweeps of Television where Networks go all out to boost ratings and set advertising rates soaring up. There are three new Webby Award categories, which are based on traffic to sites, with Nielsen//NetRatings in charge of data collecting and analysis.

Web experts seem convinced that despite implications towards extreme commercialism, the Webby people can pull the Internet Sweeps off. Besides, they still have categories for activism and spirituality, which is a good indicator of where they're headed. Ms. Shlain sums it up best when she says that the Webbys are for "consumers overwhelmed by the Internet; we shine a light on the best for them."

But then Sweeps or not, the Webbys still provide the best possible media mileage for anyone with a web site. From giant companies, small businesses to creative individuals, the awards represent a level playing field. As long as you've got web presence, you've got a shot at a five-words-long period of fame.*

(The Webby awards are due in about a month, by the way.)

*It is Webby tradition to limit winners' acceptance speeches to only five words.

"What's up Doc?"

Here's a good old shortie from the Web...

A doctor of psychology was doing his normal morning rounds when he entered a patient's room. He found Patient A sitting on the floor, pretending to saw a piece of wood in half.

Patient B was hanging from the ceiling, by his feet.

The doctor asked Patient A what he was doing. The patient replied, "Can't you see I'm sawing this piece of wood in half?" The doctor asked Patient A what Patient B was doing. Patient A replied, "Oh. He's my friend, but he's a little crazy. He thinks he's a lightbulb." The doctor looks up and notices Patient B's face is going all red.

The doctor asks Patient A, "If he's your friend, you should get him down from there before he hurts himself"

Patient A replies, "What? And work in the dark?"

Question of the Week
I've been working really hard on my personal web site, and I think it looks as professional as it will ever be. Any chance for a "vanity site" to get a Webby? Thanks a lot.

-- Ysabella Z.
Baltimore, MD

Aristia Says
Hey Bella! Why, of course you can get a Webby. It's more or less an even playing field on the Internet, and you can reap the benefits of your hard work. There's a "Personal Web Page" category in the Webbys so webheads like you get a shot at glory. Tell your friends to get busy on their sites, or if they don't have one yet-jump on the bandwagon!

A Tip from Aristia
You don't have to be a major corporation and have the resources for a killer site to qualify for a Webby. It's as simple as submitting your web site to the Webby Awards people for review. Don't lose heart, take in the site usability and design information from your AH! issues then get to work! You may be the next winner...
