Warning on Unsolicited Renewal Offers

ArisHost warns everyone of an unscrupulous business practice that has become a practice in the domain name market place. An increasing number of domain name registration companies are making unsolicited offers to registrants of other firms. These registrants receive a letter (e-mail or post) from such companies thanking them for registering their domains. Said companies then offer registrants options to make changes to or renew their domains. Domain owners who are tricked into believing that they have existing business relationships with these solicitors will then avail of the offers and unknowingly transfer their domains. A lot of registrants stand to suffer from changed (worsened?) services when they transfer to another registrar.

ArisHost advises everyone concerned to be wary of this kind of aggresive marketing. Please be assured that ArisHost is doing whatever it can to protect its registrants. If you receive a similar letter, kindly report to abuse@arishost.com. You can visit our News Page to read more about the issue.

"I'll take the First..."

With a potentially unhindered system of trafficking information, issues revolving around freedom of speech had been sure to come up. When the words "web" and "net" were coined, the idea was easy access to information via a network. That meant you could easily get the information you wanted. That was good. But what made the Internet really special was the ease with which information could be sent out as well.

Now why should that be a problem? After all, the right to make information widely available is protected by the First Amendment-- the very principles of freedom and democracy. But here's the thing; not everyone may want to get the stuff that's out there.

So how does one go about weeding out what one doesn't want? Try filtering the information. Yes, that's right-- FILTERING (read by some as censorship). But wait, before going ballistic and taking to the streets, try considering a few things first.

The right to engage in communication is always followed by the right to refrain from it. Our beloved First Amendment simply lets us say and do what we want (with certain obvious exceptions, of course). The operative phrase here is "what we want." We have a CHOICE. So the one refusing to receive information fundamentally has the same right as the one sending it out.

Secondly, but no less important, is that a big chunk of filtering concerns the protection of children. With user interfaces and search methods improving rapidly, it can't be too hard for a minor to access sensitive material; accidentally or otherwise. No argument here. Let's face it, we have to protect our children. It's just the right thing to do.

Debates on Internet Filtering will likely go on for a long time. But that's the healthiest way to work through issues anyway. The day the debate stops is the day the freedom of speech dies. That's how it is. This article is far from a comprehensive discussion on the subject, and it does not claim to be one. So if it sends a few people up the wall, we'll take the First in writing it and they can invoke it as well by closing the browser window.

No filters needed here. And hey, since we're in what feels like the "protect kids" issue, why not give this web site some room? Even webbie-tech-big-people sites get tiring after a while. You can leave the children at the console as long as they're at this site. All they'll find are lots of games and cool stuff. Also worth a look, Mom and Dad-- there's a grownups section for you. Probably best when visited as a family, check it out!

The ArisHost site of the week: http://www.alanesart.com

This site used to be called Dragons, Etc. and is owned by Alane Fieldson, a graphic artist fascinated with scenes of fantasy and mythological creatures. The works shown, though mostly depicting the legendary fire-breathers, include other interesting subjects clearly beyond this dimension. There's also an instructional page on drawing Dragons, which had the AH! staff re-learning the use of pencil and paper. Click on the magic mouse and transport yourself to this site.

The Fruit of Our Loins

For those couples contemplating parenthood, you might want to take these tests we found on the web. Good luck!

GROCERY STORE TEST: Borrow one or two small animals (goats are best) and take them with you to the grocery store. Always keep them in sight and pay for anything they eat or damage.

DRESSING TEST: Obtain one large, unhappy, live octopus. Stuff into a small net bag. Make sure that all its arms stay inside.

FEEDING TEST: Get a large plastic milk jug. Fill it halfway with water. Suspend from the ceiling with a stout cord. Get the jug swinging. Try to insert spoonfuls of soggy cereal into the mouth of the jug while pretending to be an airplane. Now dump the contents of the jug on the floor.

FINAL ASSIGNMENT: Find a couple who already has a small child. Lecture them on how they can improve their child's discipline, patience, tolerance, toilet training, and table manners. Harp on how they should never allow their children to run riot. Enjoy this experience. It will be the last time you'll have all the answers.

Question of the Week
Hello Aristia. How exactly does one get Internet Filtering? My two kids are now starting to tinker with my computer-- will I need a huge "web sieve"?

-- Laureen L.
Cedar Rapids, IA

Aristia Says
Haha! It's no big hassle, really. There are a lot of Internet Service Providers who offer filtering. So all you have to do is sign up for an account and they'll handle the rest. Some of them even allow you to customize the level of filtering. Just go to the web and I'm sure you'll find what you need. Thanks Laureen!

A Tip from Aristia
You can have every filtering service available installed but remember that a child's first line of defense should be his or her parents. Having access to what is practically an endless stream of information has some heavy responsibilities. Make sure you and your family are prepared to handle them even before the first browser launch.
