Say What?

You may place design and graphic presentation high on your priority list, but content still has the final say...

Content is arguably a neglected aspect of website development. Site owners tend to focus on eye-catching layouts and design schemes, often forgetting that content is an essential factor in the success of any website. But once wide-eyed surfers get over flashy page design, they are going to want to interact with the website. This is where content plays a crucial role, so you should pay attention to what information you put in and how you present it.

Before we proceed, remember that content is not just the text you read on web pages, it includes how the website works-- links, where these links go, popups, etc.

Go with the flow

In the late 70's, psychologist and University of Chicago professor Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi did research on a person's engagement with a situation. He then came up with what he called Flow, a theory that defines the factors of ideal "personal engagement." Some factors he mentions are:

*There are clear goals every step of the way.
*There is immediate feedback to one's actions.
*There is no worry of failure.
*The activity becomes autotelic (an end in itself).

And because people who go online "engage" with the Internet, the principles of Flow are still relevant in today's high tech environment. The eLab at Vanderbilt University, using scientific measurements based on these principles, has actually come up with a concept of the ideal Internet encounter. So keep these Flow factors in mind when working on the content and functionality of your website.

Keep it fresh

Ever visit a site with content that was last updated in 1998? If you have, let the experience be a wake-up call. Something like that is never pleasant for the user. It also says a lot about the site's owner.

Yes, constantly uploading can be a bother at times. But overall, keeping content fresh isn't really that difficult.

You might want to try using a blog (from weblog). It's a program that lets you add content without uploading; content you add gets tranferred to your site via the blog program. Another solution is to streamline your website: leave only the important stuff. It'll be much easier to keep content updated this way. If you can't keep up with a certain page, take what you need then remove the page. It also helps a lot if you clearly mark archived material as archived material. Aside from letting people know what's new and old, this makes inventory/documentation easier.

The ArisHost site of the week: http://arf-in.com

Though hounded by controversy up to his death in 1993, Frank Zappa still maintains a strong following of loyal fans. You'd be surprised at the number of web sites dedicated to the musician. Arf-in.com is one of them. It strikes a good balance between being a connoisseur site and one for those just browsing around. You can find links to other Zappa sites, photos, postcards and even a couple of MP3 files. Drop by for more on the Muffin Man.

No Tiger

Know someone who takes on a round of golf a bit too seriuosly? Read on then...this one's off the Web...

One day a man and his wife are playing golf at their home course. On a certain par four, the man tees it up and hits a big slice into the woods. They find his ball directly behind one of the greenskeeper's buildings where equipment is stored- so now he can't play toward the green at all. "Darn!" the man says, "I'll have to play sideways to get back on the fairway. I'll make five at best." But his wife, who had been looking things over, said "Look, this shed has double doors at both ends. If we open them up, you can hit a low shot right through the building toward the green." The man congratulated his wife on her cleverness and they set up for the shot. But the ball hit the top of the far doorframe and came whistling back, striking his wife in the temple, killing her on the spot. A year or so later, the same man was playing the same par 4 and hit his tee shot in almost exactly the same spot as before, right behind the building. As he is cursing his luck and preparing to swing, one of his playing partners says, "Wait, look we can open these double doors and..." "No way," the man says, cutting him off. "I was tried that shot last year and ended up making a six."

Question of the Week
Just how did blogs come around? Are they the result of a mad scientist's expirement gone terribly wrong?

-- John Paul R.
Bowling Green, KY

Aristia Says
Hey there JP! The word "blog" was coined by Jorn Barger in 1997, he got it from the word "weblog"- of which there were only a handful at the time. They began as posting boards for web enthusiasts, somewhere to post essays, poems, etc. There was a blog explosion around 1999, when more people started warming up to the Internet. And from that humble start, the blog is now a useful web tool. But experts think their evolution is far from over, so who knows what's next?

A Tip from Aristia
The amount of text you put on a page is really up to you. If the material is lengthy but good, people won't mind scrolling down every couple of paragraphs. But use your judgment well, web surfers are a picky bunch. As for minimal content, it's much better than trying to cram everything on one page. You'll end up with an overstuffed site and gluttony, my friends, is a sin.
