Food, Clothing, Networked Shelter

1999 saw developers of home networking technology frothing at the mouth. Trends indicated a boom in the industry; 650,000 homes in America were wired, and the Yankee Group projected an annual growth rate of 95% over four years. That's 10 million American households by 2003. Research by Frost & Sullivan showed the home networking market generated at least $37.9 million in only the first six months of '99 compared to $34.5 million for the whole of 1998. Though still in its infantile stages, the technology showed great promise. Proof of this is that during that year, even utility firms showed great interest. A gas and electric company down South planned to offer the technology to its 6 million customers.

That was three years ago. Now's a good time to ask: "quo vadis home networking?" Did it turn out to be all it was vaunted to be? Is its progress still on course?

Not too far off track, matter of fact. Cahners In-Stat disclosed that the home networking market got $290 million in sales last year. Another study by the Yankee Group revealed that a third of PC owners wanted home networking in one variation or another. The Jupiter Group estimated that by 2006 more than a third of online households in the US will have wired homes. Everything seemed to be coming up roses for the in-home network, but there are still issues to be tackled.

A recent report from Accenture stands as the voice of dissent. Their study shows that consumers in fact are apprehensive about having more technology in their homes. They care even less for having to pay it, and most of them believe they already spend too much on what they have now. Bad news for companies who have investesd heavily in home networking. There's also compatibility and operability issues. Close to 88% of respondents want new in-home network products to easily work with their existing ones. As for operability, some studies have shown that up to 70% of adults in the US have problems with a VCR. Go figure.

The ArisHost site of the week: http://www.cabbagerock.com

The virtual soil where moonshine purveyors Cabbage are planted. We seriously dug the site, from its approriately green hue to the ambient track that keeps visitors company. You'll find info on the band, gig dates, some interesting "interactive" features and a couple of tunes as well. As for the music; a number of us have already been converted. We recommend you drop by and have a look-- and, of course, listen.

Move over, Mr. Webster

From the Net...here's a couple of terms you might run into one of these days. Make sure you know them by heart...

VULCAN NERVE PINCH - The taxing hand position required to reach all the appropriate keys for certain commands. For instance, the warm re-boot for a Mac II involves simultaneously pressing the Control key, the Command key, the Return key and the Power On key. Sometimes referred to as the "THREE-FINGERED SALUTE."

CLM (Career Limiting Move) - Used among microserfs to describe ill-advised activity. Trashing your boss while he or she is within earshot is a huge CLM.

BLAMESTORMING - Sitting around in a group discussing why a deadline was missed or a project failed and who is responsible.

PERCUSSIVE MAINTENANCE - The fine art of beating an electronic device into submission, with the hope of getting it to work again.

PRAIRIE DOGGING - When someone yells or drops something loudly in a cube farm*, and people's heads pop up over the walls to see what's going on.

*an office filled with cubicles

Question of the Week
Just wondering, can a home network really help me? How about in everyday stuff? Thanks a bunch.

-- Benjamin S.

Aristia Says
Yes it can. Home networking allows all users in the household to access the Internet and applications at the same time. This includes sharing/swapping files (data, audio and video) and even software packages. Printers, scanners, etc. can also be shared. These features save you money. To help you save time, products that can manage some things around the house are coming out. Heat, lighting and security cameras are some of the more common applications. Thanks for writing in Ben!

A Tip from Aristia
As interoperability is a major issue in home networks, keep this in mind when setting up your home system. Be sure to check what works with what and if it works well. A lot of people get frustrated after spending loads of cash on something that doesn't work with their existing set-up. So better do a lot of research and look at the specs before purchasing any product. Happy networking!
