"Where forth art thou?"

Here's a brief discussion on search engines. Find out how to make them work to your advantage and direct more traffic to your site.

There are two main types of cyberspace "sniffers": the crawler-based search engines and the human-powered directories. Crawler-based engines use software agents like "spiders" that prowl the web for information related to a search. Human-powered directories rely on good old-fashioned editors who review web pages. Now, if you want any degree of success on the Internet, you'll have to submit your site so it can be easily picked by any type of search engine. It is wise to put in meta tags and still configure your site's contents for human-edited directories.

As said in the previous article on meta tags, keywords are crucial. Good keyword selection usually results in high ranking with search engines. When coming up with your keywords, remember that not everyone thinks like you do so make sure all bases are covered. Think in reverse. Ask yourself the question, "If I were looking for my site, how would I find it?" Call a couple of friends over and let them list down what queries they would put in a search for your site.

Also, search engines prefer web pages with keywords that are ideally located on top of the page. Spiders don't really like going too deep while on searches-keep that in mind. Try using your target keywords for your page headline. Put them in the first paragraphs of your web page. Just place them where they can easily be seen.

One more thing: though there are always meta tags at your disposal should your site be graphic-rich, nothing beats text. It's always helpful to present your web site via content and not rely on visuals alone.

Talkin' bout my IT generation

You'd think that in today's high-tech, information-obsessed times, there'd actually be some learning going on. Think again. Here are actual answers to science exams given to junior high, high school and even college students. Off the Web...

"The body consists of three parts - the brainium, the borax and the abminable cavity. The brainium contains the brain, the borax contains the heart and lungs, and the abominable cavity contains the bowls, of which there are five - a, e, i, o, and u."

"The tides are a fight between the Earth and moon. All water tends towards the moon, because there is no water in the moon, and nature abhors a vacuum. I forget where the sun joins in this fight."

"Germinate: To become a naturalized German."

"A permanent set of teeth consists of eight canines, eight cuspids, two molars, and eight cuspidors."

"Respiration is composed of two acts, first inspiration, and then expectoration."

Question of the Week
Hey there, Aristia! I've been stumbling over the term "mixed results" a lot lately. What's that about?

-- Maria D.
Akron, OH.

Aristia Says
In the early years of the web, search engines were either exclusively crawler-based or human-powered. But nowadays, they use hybrid systems that combine both (though one is used more than the other). "Mixed results" come from this type of search engine. Thanks Maria!

A Tip from Aristia
It's good practice to get a lot of links with other web sites. Major search engines use link analysis systems, so more links means better exposure. Go to reputable web sites and ask them if they could put in your link. Chances are a lot will let you. And as a matter of courtesy, be sure you offer to link back.
