FrontPage Tutorial

Microsoft FrontPage is a very popular tool that can be especially helpful if you don't know anything about HTML, or if you're looking to build a quality Web site without spending the time and money to hire a Web developer.

With FrontPage, you can create and edit Web pages, make hyperlinks, import graphics, design a feedback form, add navigation bars to pages and then publish a Web site containing those pages. It even allows you to integrate active elements such as hit counters and guest books into your Web site without knowledge of programming.

This quick, 9-step tutorial shows you how.

STEP 1 Create a new Web Site
Keep in mind that FrontPage Extensions are already installed by default on all ArisHost accounts. To create your website, launch FrontPage 2000.
  • Click File / New / Web from the menu bar. "Web" in the context of FrontPage means a complete Web site.
  • Select Empty Web under the Web Sites tab.

STEP 2 Create a Home Page
You'll see a split screen with a list of folders on the left.
  • Select File / New / Page from the main menu.
  • Select Normal Page under the General tab. A blank page will open in the frame on the right.
This is a blank Web page where you can place anything you want.
  • Click on the page in the right-hand frame. Enter some text like "My Web Site".
  • Click Format / Paragraph from the main menu. With the Alignment drop-down box, select Center and click OK. This will center your text.
STEP 3 Add text, lines and hyperlinks
  • After entering your page heading text, move to the next line. Here you can add a horizontal line to separate it from the body text. From the main menu, select Insert / Horizontal Line.
  • Next enter a general overview of your website, the products and services you offer and what a visitor can expect to find at your site. If you don't want the text to be centered, click Format / Paragraph from the main menu. With the Alignment drop-down box, select Left and click OK.
  • You could change the font size and type of your text by highlighting the necessary text and click Format / Font from the main menu.
  • To add a hyperlink, type the text you want to be in the line (like "High-Quality CDs"). Highlight the text and select Insert / Hyperlink from the main menu. You will see a Create Hyperlink dialogbox. In the URL field, enter the Web page's Internet address. The http:// part is already completed for you. Click OK when finished. You'll be returned to the main screen and your highlighted text will now be "hot spotted".
STEP 4 Add Graphics to your site
Now we have a Web page with a title, some descriptive body text and a hyperlink. Let's add an image.
  • First you'll need to put some images in your Web page's Images folder. Your Web page will read pictures from the Images folder displayed under FrontPage's Folder List frame. Use Windows Explorer to locate an image on your hard drive that you want to add to your Web page. Drag and drop the image onto the Images folder icon in FrontPage's left-hand frame.
  • In the right-hand frame, move your cursor to the location where you'd like to place the image.
  • After moving the image, select Insert / Picture / From File from the main menu.

Double-click on the Images folder in the dialog box. You will see the image or images you copied over. Double click on the image you want to insert. The image will now appear where you had your cursor.
STEP 5 Create a Table
Let's add a table for you to organize the products that your site will be selling.
  • Move your cursor to the desired location. Select Table / Insert / Table from the main menu. The dialog box like the one you see here will appear.
  • Use the Rows and Columns spin boxes to select the number of rows and columns that you'd like to include in your table, and click the OK button. An empty table will be inserted at the location that you specify.
Move your cursor to any section of the table that you'd like to start with, and begin typing. Use the Tab key to move between columns and rows.

STEP 6 Add a Hit Counter
A hit counter lets you track how many visitors come to your site.
  • Move your cursor to the location where you'd like to insert the hit counter, and select Insert / Component / Hit Counter from the main menu.
  • This will open up a small window where you can select the type of counter you'd like to have on your page. Select the type and click OK.
  • For now, all you'll see is a component box that looks something like this: [Hit Counter]. This will appear as the counter that you selected once you upload the Web page to our server.
STEP 7 Save your Web Page
When you're finished with the page, select File / Save from the main menu. Change the default file name to index.htm and click the Save button. Index.htm is a special file name that is being automatically loaded as the starting page or home page. Now you can close the page. Select File / Close.

STEP 8 Create an Order Form
Next, let's create an order form so a customer can order one of your products.
  • Select File / New / Page from the main menu. Under the General tab, select Form Page Wizard. This will open a window that will walk you step by step through the process of building a custom form.
  • Review the instructions on the first wizard dialog box and click the Next button. Click the Add button on the second wizard dialog box. Use the Add button to add what information you want to collect on your order page. For example, add contact information, account information, product information and ordering information. Once you've added all the information you want to collect, click the Finish button.
  • Your raw order form will appear in the editing frame and you can make changes to the text as you desire. Once the form is just as you want it on your page, select File / Save from the main menu. Give your page a relevant name. Be sure the file name has a .htm or .html extension.
STEP 9 Publish Your Site
After you've finished creating your site, it's time to publish it to the Web.
  • Select File / Publish Web from the main menu. A window similar to the one displayed here will open.
  • In the text box under Specify the location to publish your Web to, enter your ftp address in the format: yourdomain.com. For example if your domain is business.com you would enter http://business.com.
  • Click the Publish button and publishing will begin.
  • You will be prompted to provide your user name and password. Enter your domain name as your user name. Be sure to use only lowercase letters. Then, click the OK button. If an FTP box opens, this indicates you don't have your FrontPage extensions installed correctly. E-mail ArisHost Technical Support support@arishost.com to assist you.
